Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester team seemed determined to spoil Pep Guardiola’s men’s celebration in the penultimate league game as their robust defense left the hosts with no way through at the Etihad Stadium.
However, the Foxes’ resolve was broken in the 70th minute after Kompany scored with a stunning strike from outside the box, hitting the top corner.
As Manchester City defeated Leicester 1-0, with Vincent Kompany saving the blushes, James Milner recalls how Jurgen Klopp reacted to the goal.
“But then the preparation for the next game [after Liverpool lost 3-0 to Barcelona in the first leg of the 2018/2019 edition of the Champions League] and we needed City to drop points the night before and Vinny [Vincent Kompany] goes and [I’ve] seen him do it 100 times in training, cutting across, and this time he cuts across and goes top corner,” he said on Football’s Greatest Top 5.
“[It] was the day of the game and the coach said, ‘Anyone want to say anything about what happened last night? No, okay, let’s go.'”

Furthermore, it seems Klopp was aware that a pessimistic reaction wouldn’t help his team, who still had a chance to win the title on the last day of the season if the Sky Blues faltered.
However, Manchester City retained the league title in style by defeating Brighton & Hove Albion 4-1, after falling behind to an early goal from Glenn Murray, with strikes from Sergio Aguero, Aymeric Laporte, Ilkay Gundogan, and Riyad Mahrez.
